Sea otters are fascinating creatures and one of the few animals that use tools. Sea otters often use rocks to crack open clams, mussels, and crabs. The bicycle is a biker’s favorite tool, and the Sea Otter Classic celebrates both the bike and the bicyclist.
The Inaugural race took place in 1991 as the Laguna Seca Challenge. The first races took place in Monterey and focused on mountain bike racing. The event was renamed the Sea Otter Classic in 1993. The Sea Otter Classic honors the southern sea otter, which thrives on the Pacific Coast.
Today, the event draws over 9,000 participants and 74,000 spectators. The Sea Otter Classic is one of the world’s largest bicycle gatherings.
Registration
If you plan to compete in a race or join an event, registration is essential. Check out the Sea Otter Classic webpage, choose your races, and register in advance.
Parking
If you are an athlete attending a specific race, check out the race registration page for parking and location information. General parking is on Wolf Hill. Athletes should allow 45 minutes to park and get to Athlete Registration. Red lot 9 is closer but requires a paid parking pass.
Food and Drinks
The Sea Otter festival has three food courts, so you won’t go hungry or thirsty. Over a dozen local food vendors serve the festival. Visit the Sierra Nevada Beer Garden, the Stadium Food Court, or Brews and Bites. At the Sierra Nevada Beer Garden, you’ll find great BBQ and Sea Otter Ale. There are outdoor picnic tables as well as indoor seating options.
Brews and Bites features a variety of food items, including vegetarian, vegan, and meat options.
You can eat lunch at the Stadium Food Court while watching award ceremonies.

Race
The Sea Otter Classic features over 300 events. Athletes can race in dozens of categories, such as BMX, enduro, road, dual slalom, cross-country, and downhill. There are different races for professionals and amateurs. In addition, the area has diverse terrain and scenic vistas as backdrops for each race.
Expo
The expo area has over 500 vendors representing over 1000 brands. Get autographs from your favorite athletes and check out the latest technologies and gadgets.
Demo
If you want to check out a new bike, you are in luck! The expo features bike demos and different product samples as well as stunt shows.
Kid’s Zone
The Kid’s Zone has activities for young riders to have fun, try different bikes, and take on an obstacle course. Younger kids can check out the balance bikes and learn to ride.
