Monterey is hosting the 22nd Annual Sea Otter Classic from April 19-22, a four-day celebration of cycling. The Sea Otter Classic consists of several competitive cycling events and a festival with food, drinks and free entertainment for children and adults alike.
Professional and amateur athletes come to Monterey every year to participate in mountain and road bike races. The Sea Otter Classic is a great place for cyclists to race, sign autographs and share their techniques.
You are invited to also participate in recreational rides, including Sea Otter’s Gran Fondo route with your family and friends. AGran Fondo is a cycling event or all ages over 12. The routes ride through Carmel Valley, the Monterey coast and the mountains. Bicycling Magazine will provide refueling and hydration stages all over each route to replenish your energy along the way.
The largest consumer bike exposition in North America is held at Sea Otter Classic every year. It’s a great chance to take advantage of discounts and sample new products from hundreds of vendors.
The Sea Otter Village Monterey hosts this festival every year with a food court and beer & barbecue garden. The four days will be packed full of free activities such as bike demonstrations, stunt shows, and even special events for your little ones. Kids events include a Sea Otter egg hunt, kids bike races, bike play zone and carnival.
The first Sea Otter Classic was originally called the Laguna Seca challenge and was held on April 6 & 7, 1991. 350 athletes competed while 150 spectators watched. The event has grown considerably in the last twenty years, as now nearly 10,000 athletes and 50,000 race fans attend the event every year. It is renowned as one of the world’s largest bicycle festivals.
